Decatur woman receives communion from pope during visit to Vatican

Decatur, AL...interesting story of the procedure one goes through to receive such an honor...that also involves praying at the tomb of Pope John Paul II. Yet the reason I'm posting it is more because of the picture which is the first incident where I've seen the pope pictured giving someone Holy Communion in the hand:

  1. I've seen it during the televised Masses from Rome, but this is a first photo for me too. I recall reading somewhere that John Paul II, although recognizing that receiving in the hand was licit, didn't like it and reportedly before a Mass in the US made it known that anybody in the line to receive Holy Communion from him had to receive on the tongue.

If you saw Pope Benedict celebrating Mass in Poland, nobody received Holy Communion in the hand, either from the Pope or in the crowd.

  2. The surprise is that this is a surprise to anyone.

Over the past ten years, in MANY papal Masses broadcast on EWTN, priests and popes (John Paul II and Benedict XVI) have been shown distributing Holy Communion in the hand to various people. There is nothing unusual or improper in this.

  3. If that is the case, I will readily confess that I've certianly missed it.
